Research internship in Canada: applications are now open for the Mitacs Globalink 2027 programme
Applications are now being accepted for the 2027 Mitacs Globalink Research Internship programme. As part of this year’s selection process, the research project ‘Language, Culture, and Identity in the Ukrainian Immigrant Community: Social Media, Influencers, and Community Engagement’ has been included in the official list of approved initiatives.
The project is being carried out by the Department of Modern Languages and Cultural Studies at the University of Alberta, under the supervision of Dr Alexander Pankieiev and Dr Alla Nedashkivska.
This research project focuses on the role of language, culture, memory and identity within the contemporary Ukrainian immigrant community in Alberta, with a particular emphasis on social media and the digital sphere.
The study analyses how Ukrainian-speaking influencers shape discussions on identity and language practices in the context of migration and Russia’s war against Ukraine. It also examines the functioning of multilingualism and language ideologies in both online and offline spaces, and involves the collection and qualitative analysis of data from interviews, surveys, social media content and materials from public discourse.
The project is aimed at students of the humanities and social sciences: linguistics, sociolinguistics, anthropology, cultural studies, media and journalism, sociology, migration studies, etc. Fluency in English and a knowledge of Ukrainian are essential for working with primary sources.
Financial support under the programme covers round-trip airline tickets and airport transfers in Canada, accommodation, meals and daily expenses, student fees, compulsory health insurance for the duration of the stay, mentoring support at the university, and access to professional development courses.
Eligibility criteria and conditions of participation: full-time undergraduate student status, a minimum GPA of 80, and submission of an application independently via the Mitacs portal, selecting between 3 and 10 projects in at least three Canadian provinces.
Deadline for applications: 16 September 2026 at 23:00 (Kyiv time).
