Participation in the ‘Science and Sail’ international summer school
Between 2 and 9 August 2026, Viktor Bryn, a graduate student pursuing a Master’s degree in Ecology and Bioeconomics at WUNU, took part in the international summer school ‘Science and Sail’, which brought together over 40 young researchers from Germany, Finland, Slovakia, Poland, Ukraine and the Baltic region.
The training sessions took place at Klaipėda University (Lithuania) and Riga Technical University (Latvia). The main aim of the initiative is to investigate the environmental condition of the Baltic Sea, study climate change and develop strategies for the sustainable development of coastal areas.
This project was organised as part of the Baltic University Programme (BUP), of which West Ukrainian National University is a member.
The summer school programme included monitoring and research into unique natural areas, including the Curonian Spit, the Pajūris Regional Park, and the coastal ecosystems of Latvia and Lithuania. Summer school participants had the opportunity to deepen their knowledge and improve their skills in conducting scientific research on climate change, biodiversity loss and the impact of human activity on the unique environment of the Baltic Sea. The training sessions were held in groups led by postgraduate students. During this period, participants collected data, consulted with experts, studied key indicators and learnt to draw conclusions to gain a better understanding of developments along the Baltic Sea coast.
Viktor Bryn was an active participant in seminars led by leading European experts in the fields of marine biology, oceanography and environmental management. Together with an international team, he was involved in data collection and the analysis of environmental indicators, and successfully defended a joint research project.
