Bohdan Soroka, a student of West Ukrainian National University, took part in a short-term volunteering project in the Kingdom of the Netherlands, organised as part of the European Solidarity Corps (ESC) programme. His participation in this international initiative was made possible by the WUNU Student Support Centre, the university’s International Relations Office, and the non-governmental organisation ‘Stella’.

The project took place at the social restaurant ‘AanTafel’, where the student had the opportunity to try his hand at various roles. Bohdan worked as a barista and a waiter, helped the team in the kitchen, and also interacted with customers in English every day, honing his communication skills and gaining valuable international experience.

As part of the project, volunteers were provided with accommodation, had their food costs covered and were given a pocket allowance, which enabled them to focus entirely on their work, studies and intercultural exchange.

Bohdan’s participation in the project served as further proof that international volunteering programmes create equal opportunities for students with special educational needs and promote their active integration into the international youth community.

“It’s brilliant to take orders in English! The work was easy thanks to the support of my mentors and colleagues. This experience is invaluable,” says Bohdan.

Throughout the project, the student received comprehensive support from the host organisation’s team and the volunteer community. During the initial phase, he was supported by Sofia, an experienced former volunteer, and during the final phase by Yelyzaveta, a programme participant. Mentors were on hand throughout his stay to help him settle in and successfully complete his assigned tasks.

“Bohdan’s participation in an international volunteering project is a shining example of how inclusion knows no borders, and that opportunities for development are available to everyone. We are delighted that, thanks to the collaboration between the WUNU Student Support Centre, the International Relations Office and our partners, students are able to get involved in such initiatives. We urge young people to make the most of international opportunities, as these are precisely what help them gain new experiences, build self-confidence and develop key skills for their future careers,” emphasised Nataliia Yablonska, Director of the WUNU Student Support Centre.

West Ukrainian National University will continue to support students in carrying out international initiatives and taking part in mobility programmes that help to foster an active, responsible and successful younger generation.
