The Taras Shevchenko Academic Regional Ukrainian Drama Theatre in Ternopil staged a performance of May Night, dedicated to the 60th anniversary of West Ukrainian National University.

What made the production unique was that the leading roles were played by lecturers and students from the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities of WUNU. Those whom the university community was accustomed to seeing in lecture halls, at classes, academic events and faculty functions revealed themselves to the audience in a new light that evening — through the stage, imagery, words, music, emotion and acting.

For one evening, the audience was immersed in a world of Ukrainian charm, folk traditions, subtle humour, lyrical sentiment and the mystical beauty of a May night. The production combined raw emotion, striking characters, unexpected transformations and a genuine love for the art of theatre.

The leading roles were played by lecturers and students from the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities:
Levko – Roman Mateiko, Halia – Kateryna Shapoval, the village headman – Petro Vorobets, the distiller – Volodymyr Chaika, the blacksmith – Volodymyr Pryshliak, the clerk – Andrii Strotsen, Ahlaida – Oksana Pysarchuk, the young lady – Oleksandra Patriak, residents of Dykanka – Andrii Hirniak, Iryna Nedoshytko, Nataliia Bezpalova, the water spirit – Vladyslav Barna.

The performances by students from the Department of Design and Architecture, the Department of Information and Sociocultural Activities, the Department of Educology and Pedagogy, the Department of Psychology and Social Work, and the Department of Physical Rehabilitation and Sport deserved a special round of applause: Maksym Kudelevych, Mariia Konoba, Dariia Matsko, Taras Symchyshyn, Anastasiia Yamniak, Diana Vlasynevych, Solomiia Letsan, Yuliia Pivtorak, Viktoriia Svorin, Maksym Tatarkin, Nadiia Muliarska, Tetiana Stravinska, Stanislav Kachuryn, Inessa Maksio, Oleksandr Kazmiruk.

We extend our deepest respect and gratitude to the stage director, Yurii Chernenko, who worked diligently and passionately with the team from the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities.

The production of May Night was not only a cultural event but also an important part of West Ukrainian National University’s anniversary celebrations. It demonstrated that the university is a place not only for knowledge and scholarship, but also for creativity, inspiration, self-fulfilment and unity.

Our heartfelt thanks go to all those involved in the performance for their talent, team spirit, inspiration and hard work. Special thanks also go to the audience for their warm welcome, support, genuine enthusiasm and thunderous applause.
