The Third International Conference for Young Scientists: ‘Artificial Intelligence for Sustainable Development’
On 7–8 May 2026, the third international conference for young researchers, ‘Artificial Intelligence for Sustainable Development’, was held at West Ukrainian National University and at the ‘Nad Strypoyu’ holiday resort (Skomorokhy village). The event brought together young researchers from Ukraine, Poland, Germany, Czechia and Croatia, who presented the results of their research and shared their findings in the field of artificial intelligence and its application towards achieving sustainable development goals.
Participants worked within four thematic sections focusing on the use of smart technologies in the fields of economics, governance, the environment, infrastructure, law, social development and education. The organisers included West Ukrainian National University, Wrocław University of Economics and Business, University of Bielsko-Biała, Deggendorf Institute of Technology and University of South Bohemia.
Viktor Ostroverkhov, Vice-Rector for Academic Affairs and Research of West Ukrainian National University, addressed the workshop participants with a welcome speech: ‘It is a great honour for our university to serve as the venue for this important international scientific event for the third time, bringing together young researchers from across Ukraine and abroad to exchange scientific achievements, ideas and lively discussions within the walls of WUNU. Today, the topic of artificial intelligence is one of the key issues in global scientific and public discourse. At the same time, it is extremely important that our conference focuses specifically on the use of artificial intelligence to achieve sustainable development goals, support innovative transformations, and advance education, law, the economy and society.
The plenary session of the workshop featured presentations by keynote speakers: Professor Frane Urem, Vice-Rector of the University of Applied Sciences in Šibenik (Republic of Croatia), a professor at the University of Zadar (Republic of Croatia), an Oracle Academy instructor (EMEA region) with a presentation on the ‘Eco Minds Project’, and Dr Przemysław Pałka, Jagiellonian University (Republic of Poland) and Yale University (USA), who spoke on the topic ‘Cause and Cure: AI-Assisted Compliance Assessment Under EU Digital Regulation’.
The conference programme covered four main areas: smart technologies for the economy and governance; innovation in environmental management and infrastructure; technological innovation in law and social development; and the application of artificial intelligence in education. Within these areas, over 40 research papers were presented by young scientists from Ukraine, Poland, the Czech Republic, Germany and other countries. Participants not only presented the results of their research but also actively engaged in discussions and developed new ideas for joint projects.
The conference programme included not only academic presentations and discussions, but also activities designed to develop the participants’ soft skills. Informal interaction, the exchange of ideas and relaxation in the picturesque surroundings of Skomorokhy helped to foster intercultural interaction and strengthen academic collaboration.
The conference was moderated by Hanna Poperechna, Chair of the Scientific Society of Students, Postgraduates, Doctoral Candidates and Young Scientists at WUNU, and Oleh Pitsun, Secretary of the Scientific Society of Students, Postgraduates, Doctoral Candidates and Young Scientists at WUNU.
It is worth noting that, following the conference, the proceedings were compiled into a collection of academic papers, which will undergo a peer-review to be included in the Scopus scientometric database.
We would like to thank the conference participants for their interesting presentations; we wish everyone peace and harmony, and look forward to seeing you in person next year.
