The Zukunft Ukraine Research Fellowship: new opportunities for young researchers of WUNU
West Ukrainian National University is pleased to announce that applications are now open for the international research fellowship programme ‘Zukunft Ukraine’ (Ukraine of the Future), which offers Ukrainian students and researchers the opportunity to undertake a short-term research placement in Germany.
The programme aims to support research activities at higher education institutions in Ukraine, as well as to encourage young researchers to play an active role in the country’s recovery and the development of its scientific community.
Who can take part?
We invite highly qualified Ukrainian master’s students, postgraduate students, PhD students, and lecturers at higher education institutions who are studying or working in Ukraine (regardless of the country in which they are currently residing).
What does the programme involve?
Participants will have the opportunity to undertake a research placement lasting between 1 and 6 months at state or state-recognised universities in Germany or at non-university research institutions. The research topic must be agreed in advance with a research supervisor in Germany.
Funding period: from 1 August 2026 to 31 January 2027 (non-renewable).
Financial support:
The amount of the monthly scholarship depends on the participant’s level of education:
• €992 — for Master’s students;
• €1,400 — for PhD students;
• €2,000 — for postdoctoral researchers;
• €2,150 — for experienced researchers and lecturers holding a PhD;
• €2,300 — for professors.
In addition, the programme covers the costs of health insurance and travel. Participants with disabilities or chronic illnesses may receive additional financial support.
Eligibility criteria:
Candidates must be Ukrainian citizens and either be enrolled at a Ukrainian higher education institution or be employed at a state scientific institution. Citizens of other countries who, as of 24 February 2022, were residing in Ukraine on the basis of a permanent residence permit are also eligible to apply.
Please note that you may apply to the programme more than once, but there must be a gap of at least 12 months between funding periods.
Applications will open on 1 April 2026.
Applications must be submitted via the official DAAD portal.
We invite students and researchers from WUNU to take advantage of this opportunity for professional development, international collaboration and the pursuit of their own research initiatives!
