The STEM School at WUNU – a place where ideas for the future are born
West Ukrainian National University is home to the STEM School, an educational hub that brings together gifted students interested in pursuing careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. The school’s aim is to nurture a generation of future leaders and innovators capable of thinking creatively, analytically and responsibly.
During the “STEM English: Pitching Lab” session with Viktoriia Korobii, participants consolidated the knowledge gained in the previous session by simulating job interviews after a short round-robin writing warm-up. Next, through an interactive game on the Kahoot platform, they identified the key features of formal English. After analysing a sample business proposal, the participants identified its structural elements, typical linking phrases and the most commonly used business terms. At the end, the participants created their own proposals for improving school grounds.
In the “Digital Design” and “3D Modelling” sessions led by Nazar Ivanitskyi and Diana Krysak, participants explored the capabilities of 3D printing, studied the principles of how the equipment works, the types of materials available, and printer calibration techniques. Thanks to the use of VR and AR technologies, the pupils were able to virtually immerse themselves in the world of design and modelling, watching innovations come to life in real time.
The pupils also had the opportunity to delve into the world of mathematical statistics and probability theory alongside Oksana Bashutska. During the session, they explored the Monty Hall paradox – a problem that demonstrates how mathematical logic can contradict intuitive judgements. Using interactive panels, participants analysed formulas and combinations and experimentally verified the results, discovering that learning can be both science-based and exciting.
A key component was a training session on developing creativity and lateral thinking led by Mariia Bryhadyr. Participants learnt how to generate new ideas, seek unconventional solutions, evaluate the effectiveness of their own projects, and foster an atmosphere of trust and inspiration.
The STEM School project is being implemented with the support of the Vovk Foundation, BlueCheckUkraine and the International Institute of Communications NGO.
