A lecture entitled ‘From Master of Law to Legal Professions’ was held at West Ukrainian National University.

Speaker – Aneta Paleczna, Doctor of Law, Professor at the Faculty of Law of the University of Silesia in Katowice (Poland), practising advocate.

Teachers, researchers, postgraduate students and students majoring in Law, International Law, Finance, Banking, Insurance and Stock Market, Financial Literacy, Public Management and Administration joined the discussion.

Ms Aneta gave a detailed overview of the path of a Polish lawyer, which is complex but clearly structured. The lecture covered all stages of professional development for lawyers in Poland. It was noted that the programme lasts five years (10 semesters) and culminates in a Master of Law degree. Graduates are required to demonstrate proficiency in a foreign language and successfully defend their thesis.

In her presentation, the lecturer paid special attention to the specifics of taking exams for the status of attorney, barrister, notary, prosecutor, and judge. In particular, they discussed the test format (150 questions) and the passing score (100 answers). The internship (application) format, which varies from 2 years (for bailiffs) to 3.5 years (for notaries). Regarding the authority of interns, the lecturer emphasised the possibility of representing parties in court after only 6 months of training for future lawyers.

The speaker drew attention to the current challenges facing the profession: fierce competition in the market and rapid changes in legislation. The academic community was particularly interested in the discussion of real-life experience of using artificial intelligence in the legal field in Poland.

We would like to thank Ms Aneta for the informative meeting, her professionalism and the opportunity to learn from valuable European experience!
