Call for applications for the Virtual Ukraine Institute for Advanced Study (VUIAS) programme
In cooperation with leading institutions in Ukraine, Europe and the United States, the Wissenschaftskolleg zu Berlin has launched an initiative to support Ukrainian scholars — the Virtual Ukraine Institute for Advanced Study (VUIAS). The institute began operations in September 2023 and has already accepted its first interdisciplinary group of fellows.
VUIAS provides scholarships to Ukrainian researchers, forms virtual scientific communities, organises colloquiums and other events, establishes international connections, and provides access to libraries and assistance in preparing publications. The programme is funded by the Volkswagen Foundation (Germany).
The programme offers two types of fellowships: VUIAS Fellowships in Ukraine – for scholars working and residing in Ukraine; VUIAS Fellowships Abroad – funded by leading advanced research institutions in Europe and the United States.
Applications are now being accepted for up to 15 VUIAS Fellowships in Ukraine for the 2026/2027 academic year.
Main conditions of the programme: duration of the fellowship – 10 months (from 1 October 2026 to 31 July 2027); fellows remain working at their institutions in Ukraine; fellowship amount: €500 per month for postdocs and €1,000 per month for professors; scientists from all fields – natural, social, humanities and technical sciences – are invited to participate; candidates must hold a PhD degree and be citizens of Ukraine or have a long-term residence permit, as well as be affiliated with a Ukrainian academic institution; the working languages of the programme are Ukrainian and English (active knowledge of English is required).
All participants in the VUIAS 2026/2027 programme will take part in interdisciplinary exchanges, including regular colloquia and other events.
