Law faculty members of the West Ukrainian National University completed an internship at the Osnabrück University
Within the framework of the Erasmus+ academic mobility programme, the faculty members of the Law Faculty of the West Ukrainian National University underwent an internship at the Osnabrück University (Germany).
From 12 to 16 May 2025, associate professors of the Department of International and European Law Hanna Poperechna, Olha Zastavna, Mykhailo Samuliak, as well as associate professor of the Department of Administrative Law and Judicial Proceedings Oksana Shevchuk took part in the internship. The programme included active participation of teachers in scientific, educational and inter-university activities.
A number of academic initiatives were put into action during the internship. In particular, lectures and training sessions were held for students and teachers of Osnabrück University as part of the Spring School of Ukrainian Law ‘Why does EU matter? Introduction to Ukrainian law: general overview and specific issues’. The school consisted of three thematic sections, each of which highlighted specific aspects of the Ukrainian legal system.
In the first section, Associate Professor Oksana Shevchuk familiarised participants with the general principles of the Ukrainian legal system, the specifics of legal regulation of human and civil rights and freedoms, and administrative procedure in Ukraine. Particular attention was paid to a comparative analysis of Ukrainian and German administrative legislation.
The second section, conducted by Associate Professor Olha Zastavna, was devoted to an overview of Ukraine's constitutional system, with a focus on the issue of the appropriateness of holding elections during martial law and in the post-war period. The discussions sparked lively interest and debate among the audience.
The third section addressed the issues of recodification of Ukrainian private law and implementation of secondary European Union law into national legislation (speaker: Associate Professor Hanna Poperechna). The aspects of entry into the legal profession in Ukraine, the specific features of the work of lawyers, and the current practice of the European Court of Human Rights in this area were considered separately (speaker: Mykhailo Samuliak, lecturer and managing partner at Samuliak & Partners Law Firm).
In addition, representatives of the Faculty of Law delivered presentations at the International Scientific and Practical Conference ‘Why does the EU matter? Perspective from member states and accession candidates’, which brought together scholars from Ukraine, Germany and other countries involved in the EU enlargement process.
As part of the programme, the lecturers also took part in the official ceremony of awarding the title of Honorary Doctor (Doctor Honoris Causa) of the West Ukrainian National University to Professor Hans Schulte-Nölke of Osnabrück University, a renowned German scientist, expert in European private law and long-standing partner of the WUNU Law Faculty in the implementation of joint academic initiatives.
The participation of lecturers in the mobility programme contributed to the deepening of inter-university cooperation, academic exchange and international integration of legal education. West Ukrainian National University would like to thank its partners from Osnabrück University for fruitful cooperation, excellent organisation of events, and shared interest in the development of European higher education.
