The environmental team of WUNU took part in the industry conference ‘Water Resources of Ukraine: Management Strategy and Modern Solutions,’ organised by the Ukrainian Water Association with the support of the ReBuild Ukraine initiative, the State Agency for Water Resources of Ukraine, the State Agency for Infrastructure Restoration and Development of Ukraine, and partners from Denmark, Sweden, France, and South Korea.

The conference is part of a series of events discussing the availability of water resources in Ukraine in the context of full-scale war. The first meeting took place on 29 January 2024 under the title ‘Restoring water supply in Ukraine: sustainable solutions and humanitarian assistance’ at the office of the European Union Delegation to Ukraine in Kyiv.

The second round table took place on 17 April 2024 in Brussels, initiated by the European Commission's European Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid Operations (ECHO Brussels) under the title ‘Ensuring water supply in Ukraine in times of war: response, recovery and resilience.’

On 15 May 2024, the following event took place in Kyiv as part of the Aquatherm Kyiv 2024 exhibition: a conference entitled ‘Water resource restoration as a concept for sustainability in Ukraine’.

On 7 November 2024, the second international conference, ‘Water Resources Management: Reality and Prospects,’ was held in Kyiv.

This year's forum focused on national water policy, regional and local aspects of implementing water supply solutions, and ways to get funding for upgrading and modernising water treatment equipment, especially for municipal utilities in Ukraine.

The third international conference ‘Water Resources of Ukraine: Management Strategy and Modern Solutions’ was moderated by Leonid Bytsiura, acting head of the Department of Ecology and Health Care at WUNU.

It should be noted that WUNU scientists pay considerable attention to water issues. A number of relevant cooperation projects are aimed at improving water use efficiency, monitoring surface and groundwater, studying the impact of water pollution on the human body, applying machine learning tools for hydroecology tasks, etc.

A specialised laboratory has been established, local environmental monitoring of the student campus has been launched, including monitoring of water quality, and scientific cooperation with researchers from the United States, Lithuania, Estonia, Poland, Israel, the Netherlands and Finland is being developed.

An important example of the activities of WUNU environmentalists is their cooperation with the international MIT group ‘Design of a Post-War, Decentralised, Renewable Energy Powered Drinking Water Supply and Treatment System in Ukraine’ led by Susan Markott.

WUNU scientists are involved in initiatives to modernise water infrastructure at the national level and in projects aimed at implementing local water policy. They are also acting as stakeholders at the UN Water Conference in 2023 and the next conference in 2026.
